Safe by design.
RentMyTools is built around trust. Every feature β verification, deposits, payments β exists to protect both sides of every rental.
Identity Verification
Every user starts as Unverified. Verify your phone number to unlock renting, then submit a government-issued ID to become ID Verified. Owners can see a renter's trust level before approving a request β and renters can see whether an owner is verified.
- βPhone verification via SMS code
- βGovernment ID review by our team (usually within 24 hours)
- βTrusted User badge: ID Verified + 5 or more completed rentals + 4.0+ rating + zero disputes
- βTrust level shown on every profile and rental request
Secure Payments & Deposits
Payments are processed by Stripe β one of the world's most trusted payment processors. Security deposits are held separately and returned automatically when the tool is confirmed back.
- βCard payments held by Stripe until rental is complete
- βSecurity deposit returned when owner confirms return
- βCash rentals also supported, with card hold for deposit + service fee
- βNo payout to owner until rental is confirmed active
Contact Details Protected
Pickup addresses and phone numbers are never shown to a renter until they have paid. This prevents time-wasters and protects owners from unwanted contact.
- βOwner address hidden until payment is confirmed
- βPhone numbers only visible to verified renters
- βMessages locked until rental is active
In-App Messaging
All communication happens inside RentMyTools. This creates a clear record if anything is disputed, and keeps personal contact details private until both parties are comfortable sharing them.
- βAll messages logged and tied to the rental
- βNo need to share personal emails or numbers early on
- βMessage history available for dispute review
Tips for a Safe Exchange
Common sense goes a long way. Here's what we recommend for every in-person pickup.
- βInspect the tool thoroughly before accepting it β note any pre-existing damage
- βTake photos at pickup and return
- βMeet in a well-lit, public or semi-public location when possible
- βCommunicate any concerns through the app so there's a record
- βIf something feels wrong, cancel and contact support
Dispute Resolution
If something goes wrong β a tool is returned damaged, or a renter claims it wasn't as described β open a dispute from your rental page. Our team reviews the case and can hold or release the deposit accordingly.
- βDisputes can be opened by either party during an active rental
- βPhotos and messages are used as evidence
- βAdmin team makes final decisions on deposit allocation
- βSerious violations may result in account suspension
